What to expect when you wax

I have many clients who have many questions about waxing: what should be done prior to waxing, what should the actions be after waxing, what are the main causes of ingrown hairs? I will start from the beginning.

I highly recommend exfoliating, not only before you go in to wax, but every other day or every few days.  The day/night before your wax, exfoliate the area to be waxed.  The less dead skin cells in the area, the easier the hair can be removed.  Make sure you moisturize your skin throughout the night, and it is best to take a warmer shower right before your wax.  I would also recommend taking a pain reliever at least 30 minutes before your appointment.  If you’re about to start your period, remember that you’re more sensitive a week before, during, and a few days after.  Don’t lay out in the sun or tanning bed a few days before.

After your wax, make sure to wear 100% cotton as often as possible.  Fabrics like spandex, lycra, nylon, polyester, and mixed fibers, don’t allow a lot of air flow, and tend to keep bacteria trapped in your pores.  Don’t use a loofah or exfoliating gloves (bacteria multiplies a ridiculous times per second).  Make sure you are exfoliating every few days because when waxing will speed up how fast your skin sheds.  Don’t wear underwear that are too tight.  This causes a lot of irritation around the panty line and labias.  YOGA PANTS! Oh my goodness, yoga pants are one of the worst things to wear.  Most Yoga pants are made from polyester, which traps bacteria into the pores.  Compression pants are made of nylon, so try not to wear either one for too long, and take a shower right after you’re done working out.  Also, if you allow hair conditioner to sit in your hair while you wash your body, and then rinse it out afterwards, instead of letting it rinse down your body, instead, turn towards the shower head, lean forward, and allow the conditioner to run into the drain.  Try not to work out, or have intercourse, for at least 24 hours afterwards.

Remember, you need some type of exfoliation post wax.  I recommend a papaya enzyme based product.  Enzymes break up protein, and working a product like this will break up the dead skin cells.
